Slim was born in Mexico City, Mexico and his father Juli谩n Slim, a Maronite Catholic, immigrated to Mexico City from Lebanon at the age of 14. Juli谩n established a dry goods store called La Estrella del Oriente (Star of the Orient) in 1911 and purchased real estate in downtown Mexico City. He and his wife had six children, of whom Carlos was the youngest boy.

In 2005 Forbes business magazine estimated Carlos Slim Helu's net worth to be $23.8 billion American dollars, making him the 4th richest person in the world.

In 2006 Carlos Slim Helu was ranked as the third richest man in the world with an estimated $30 billion in assets.

In 2007 the Mexican billionaire remained in third position but increased his wealth dramatically to an estimated $49 billion.

In June of 2007 it was reported that the wealth of Carlos Slim Helu increased to an estimated $67.8 billion, making him the richest man in the world. This puts Carlos Slim ahead of Warren Buffett and Bill Gates.
